Contrary to popular misconception, high winds are not why trees don t grow on the High Plains. It is part of the reason few people live there, and that s part of the reason its such a grand place to hunt. Nature at work. EHD disease killing whitetails in late summer. Even in a mild year for EHD and bluetongue viruses, which 2015 appears to be, there are always a few dead deer to be found. The dying buck in the photo above, photographed on September 1 by Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife biologist Joe Lacefield, was found struggling to get past this ...

The marbling in this walnut suggests this is going to be one gorgeous Rigby rifle. And chambered for the 275 Rigby (7x57mm Mauser) it will be eminently practical for hunting nearly anything. With apologies to Roosevelt, "hunt softly and carry a beautiful rifle." The World Heritage Rifle for the 2016 SCI Convention is a Corbett-style .275 Rigby honoring hunting in Asia. Rigby’s Managing Director, Marc Newton, was kind enough to give us a

Life and death in Nature captured dispassionately. This is a small part of the real world in which all organisms live. This is the part animal rights activists sweep under the carpet when they rail against hunters and laugh at any mention of starvation, disease and other "cruel" natural deaths. Of course, it is only cruel in human eyes, since "cruel" is a human concept. Either that or Nature/God is cruel. Nonetheless, humans are the only animal that tries to NOT be cruel, thus sport hunters emphasis on killing game quickly and cleanly, ideally without it ever knowing it is being stalked. We cannot escape death, cannot prevent death, cannot help but cause the demise of other sentient beings if we wish to remain alive ourselves. The key is to do it responsibly, eyes wide open, minimizing suffering and maximizing sustainable ecosystems. Long tailed duck

Goodbye old friends! My faithful goatskin leather gloves have finally worn through. Amazing how one can come to rely so much on a simple garment. I ve used these Filson hand protectors for everything from hunting and shooting to crawling through gravel, pruning rose bushes, piling brush, removing sandburs from my setter... Wonderfully light, flexible, tactile... Time for a new pair. I ll save these for training a new puppy to start retrieving. Gloves.jpg

Rules of the road: with any given cartridge and a full powder charge, the lighter the bullet, the faster the muzzle velocity and flatter the trajectory out to roughly 500 yards. The heavier the bullet, the lower the MV, but higher the downrange energy. Wind drift is minimized with the heavier bullets IF they are spire pointed. Weight plus shape (form factor) measured collectively as Ballistic Coefficient determine efficiency, trajectory, wind deflection and remaining energy. Different bullets increase the versatility of a cartridge. These, from 110-grains to 180 grains, are all for .30 bores. Bullets .308.jpg

San Bushman bows are tiny, probably because they didn t have access to large trees suitable for bow making. As a result, their arrows are more like darts with tiny points. To be effective, the shaft/wrappings behind the points were smeared with poison extracted from beetle larvae. Stuck animals had to be followed for 2 or 3 days while the poison worked, part of the reason Bushmen are such famously superb trackers. _MG_8504.jpg
