Stepped out kitchen door late afternoon to see two roosters land, cackling, in the CRP along Barn Draw 100 yards from the porch. Covey raved after them, but I was able to call her back, grab 28 ga. Mossberg SA International, @wildfowlerconcealment vest, handful of Kent 7.5s, and go to work. Covey got real birds about 300 yards from the house, right on the brink of the creek where she’d pointed a pair of roosters two days before. I took two steps toward her and a rooster exploded not 5 feet away. I shot much to soon, but even so the rooster plummeted into the nasty hawthorn thicket deep in the creek bed. Covey couldn’t find it, but I knew the 3/4- ounce load of 7.5s had crushed it. Thorough search uncovered it resting peacefully in these thorny branches, snow flakes beginning to coalesce atop the hot glow of its breast feathers. Just missed B&C all-time but easily won a slot in the freezer. Betsy set out to get meat and did after 6 mornings and evenings of thorough glassing, careful still-hunting, and slow, cautious stalking. 200 yds, 1 shot, DRY, 120-gr. @barnesbullets TTX from @jarrettrifles Beanfield rifle in 7mm-08 Rem. at 3200 FPS. @leupoldoptics VX3 3-10x40. That’s my @wildfowlerconcealment Zippered Hooded Sweatshirt she stole for the hunt. Despite the camo, the buck spotted her at the last second, but she stayed warm and made perfect shot in Muley Saddle not 400 yards from where I shot my buck last year. Now here is a beautiful 22LR rimfire. It’s a Kimber of Oregon Custom Classic M82 with French walnut stock. It clumps 5 shots in one ragged hole at 50 yards. To me this is the optimum squirrel rifle. And a pure joy to shoot. Scope is Leupold 3-9x36 with parallax adjust objective. Focusing sharply inside of 25 yards at 9x is critical when sighting a gleaming eye peering over a limb. Norma Match-22 turning in consistent speeds and stellar groups. You don’t need magnum velocities with a 22 rimfire this accurate.
