Sat in weeds at edge of alfalfa field, bashed a set of Rattling Forks artificial antlers together, grunted a few times and this guy ran out to engage. Shot him with a Canon 70D and 100-400 lens from about 65 yards several times before he figured out I was not the fight he anticipated. Rattling works best in and around the rutting season where buck to doe ratios are high and there s a good distribution of mature bucks. This was one of many 2.5 to 3.5 year old free-range bucks on Laughing Water Ranch near Bassett, NE. This is the part animal rights activists sweep under the carpet when they rail against hunters and laugh at any mention of starvation, disease and other "cruel" natural deaths. Of course, it is only cruel in human eyes, since "cruel" is a human concept. Either that or Nature/God is cruel. Nonetheless, humans are the only animal that tries to NOT be cruel, thus sport hunters emphasis on killing game quickly and cleanly, ideally without it ever knowing it is being stalked. We cannot escape death, cannot prevent death, cannot help but cause the demise of other sentient beings if we wish to remain alive ourselves. The heavier the bullet, the lower the MV, but higher the downrange energy. Wind drift is minimized with the heavier bullets IF they are spire pointed. Weight plus shape (form factor) measured collectively as Ballistic Coefficient determine efficiency, trajectory, wind deflection and remaining energy.
