The point made in this blog is a serious one: who is vetting the self-proclaimed "firearms experts" on the internet, You Tube, etc? Once upon a time a handful of magazines hired proven, tested journalists who were also firearms experts -- or at least knew how to interview experts. Now the net is littered with instant experts, making it nearly impossible for anyone to get honest answers to firearms, ammo and ballistic questions. Best advice: do thorough research, including on the "experts" dispensing advice, and take everything you find on the internet with a grain -- or whole shaker -- of salt.  Most industry promoters are idiots, and they are passing on useless garbage to the masses. Here’s why…

Horrors! Can you believe the Virginia legislature considered a bill that would have forced tax payers to reimburse veterinarians for neutering feral cats -- and then turning them lose to again savage songbirds?  The Virginia Senate and House of Delegates recently considered several bills that would impact feral cat management in the state. The Virginia Chapter of The Wildlife Society TWS) wrote letters and sent members to provide testimony to the state's Senate and House Committees to express opposition ...

Should we shoot running deer? In the middle 20th century running shots were standard. My first two whitetails were running flat out. I try to shoot them when they are standing, but sometimes they offer a running shot that just feels right. Took this 148-class in 1985 as it raced south to north at 125 yards with a 30-06, M70 Featherweight, 165-gran Nosler BT handload and 2-8X36 Leupold VX-III scope. One shot fired, one buck down. Was that unethical?

Friend Larry Chesney sent me this picture of an old Winchester ad reproduction he saw at a hunting lodge. He wonders if I posed for the father image. I wonder if my grandpa did. Naw, the guy s dressed too nicely. We Dakota farmers hunted in coveralls and blue jeans. Most amazing is how hunters in those days got any game. Where s the grease paint?  photo.JPG

I won a photo contest. More importantly, the International Hunter Education Association does fantastic work training kids and new shooters to handle firearms safely and ethically. Thanks in no small measure to IHEA s work, firearms accidents have been dropping steadily for decades. Shooting and hunting are now safer -- much safer -- than football, baseball, bicycling and virtually all other sports. Spread the good word!  Denver, Colo—Winners of the 2014 International Hunter Education Association-USA (IHEA-USA) photo contest were recently announced. Through the contest, IHEA-USA sought quality images that represented hunter education training, hunting and shooting safety, as well as other quality aspects of safe, ...

Private Land Hunting Is Saving Zambia’s Sable

Wolf lovers should stop sitting up nights, worrying. This is an apex predator capable of overwhelming every other animal in North America. It isn t delicate, isn t dependent on a narrow selection of habitats, isn t preyed upon by anything other than the odd grizzly or mountain lion. Spend time fighting to protect truly endangered species like Kirtland s warblers, CA condors and black-footed ferrets. Wolves are abundant throughout the north country and spreading south. Relax.  Just seven years after wolves began reappearing in Oregon
