Another look at the Winchester M1873 found leaning against a tree on a ridge in Great Basin Ntl. Park last November. There were no rounds in the tubular magazine and none in the chamber, but X-rays revealed one in the butt stock trap door. The cartridge lifter was missing, meaning the rifle could only fire as a single-shot. Experts dated the cartridge, a Union Metallic Cartridge Company 44 WCF (.44-40), between 1887 and 1911. Theories as to what happened to the person who left the rifle are posted and can be read at http://centerofthewest.org/explore/firearms/ and iscout.bbcw.org.
