Some background for perspective: Villagers organized to form a conservancy in this area. It s objective is to place value on local wildlife to offset agricultural damages and expenses incurred when hippos, crocs, etc. raid crops, eat cattle, stomp on children, etc. Hunting license fees are shared with the villagers. Several villagers get jobs managing the hunting camps as guides, trackers, cooks, etc. Meat from the animals killed (a small percent of the population each year so as not to reduce the breeding stock, just as is done with domestic cattle) is distributed throughout the village. This economic activity prevents poaching and revenge killing (snaring and poisoning, usually) of wildlife that would otherwise have no value to these local people. Where conservancy systems like this operate, wildlife thrives. In communal areas where paid sport hunting is not allowed, virtually all large wildlife is wiped out, poached and sold for "bushmeat" or merely killed to get rid of the nuisanc
