San Bushmen "twisting up" a fire. One works his hands down the drill, then another starts at the top to keep it going. Fire in about a minute. Bows and wood (from the quiver tree) quivers capped with hide. Arrows are really more like darts. Tipped with poison.   _MG_8710.JPG

"Cruel, heartless, ignorant hunters." The next time to hear or read this from some deep thinking anti-hunters, tell them about this gentleman: Dr. Red Duke, 86, Past President of Boone and Crockett Club MISSOULA, Mont. - Dr. James H. "Red" Duke Jr., physician, television personality, conservationist, hunter and past president of Boone and Crockett Club, died Tuesday, August 25. He was 86. Duke, of Houston, Texas, served as President of Boone and Crockett Club from 1986-87, one of the many contributions made in a lifetime he said was devoted to "caring for people and critters." He also founded the Texas Bighorn Society, which lead to successful desert sheep restoration in Texas, and served as president of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep (now the Wild Sheep Foundation) in 1986. As a hunter, Duke s fondness for mountain sheep and remote alpine highlands helped to inspire what is now his conservation legacy. For his vast contributions to conservation and accomplishments as

Some background for perspective: Villagers organized to form a conservancy in this area. It s objective is to place value on local wildlife to offset agricultural damages and expenses incurred when hippos, crocs, etc. raid crops, eat cattle, stomp on children, etc. Hunting license fees are shared with the villagers. Several villagers get jobs managing the hunting camps as guides, trackers, cooks, etc. Meat from the animals killed (a small percent of the population each year so as not to reduce the breeding stock, just as is done with domestic cattle) is distributed throughout the village. This economic activity prevents poaching and revenge killing (snaring and poisoning, usually) of wildlife that would otherwise have no value to these local people. Where conservancy systems like this operate, wildlife thrives. In communal areas where paid sport hunting is not allowed, virtually all large wildlife is wiped out, poached and sold for "bushmeat" or merely killed to get rid of the nuisanc
