Thumper is more than just a cartoon bunny, as evidenced by this pretty 500 Nitro Express double Sabatti Big Five Safari Classic. Not quite as ornate as a Faberge egg, but a bit more useful. Before buffalo becomes "what s for dinner" it needs a little convincing.   _MG_2641 copy.JPG

Good morning sunshine! Cock sage grouse displayed his nuptial finery yesterday morning in southwest ID. They ll be strutting and displaying on a lek near you for the next 60 days or so. There were 45 males and 25 hens on this lek at one time. The hens come and go, but the cocks remain on station until mid-morning, every morning as hawks and coyotes slowly pick them off.  Screen Shot 2015-03-10 at 10.00.17 AM.png

The editors at Shooting Sportsman magazine had some great things to say about this http://youtu.be/uyrc0OKmQEw You Tube video on grouse hunting in Nebraska s Sandhills:     "The appeal of “Hunting the Prairie Grouse” is its focus on the incredible beauty of the habitat, giving a real sense of the place and the wind-chapped wonder that comes from a few days walking there. There are plenty of pretty points and impressive flushes, but if you’ve hunted wild birds in open places, you’ll mostly appreciate the aesthetic. The video is blessedly light on blazing guns stacking up birds for the camera."Sign up for Shooting Sportsman Insider newsletter at this link: http://www.shootingsportsman.com/newsletter-sign Newsletter Sign-up

New World s Record Bighorn Ram!MISSOULA, Mont. - A bighorn sheep killed in a highway collision in Alberta has the largest horns ever recorded for the species. Boone and Crockett Club measurers today certified the specimen as a new World s Record. The horns final score of 209-4/8 B&C points edged out the previous World s Record, a ram taken near Luscar Mountain, Alberta, in 2000 that scores 208-3/8. The new No. 1 ram was hit by a vehicle on a highway west of Longview, Alberta. Boone and Crockett accepts and records legally obtained "pick up" (found) trophies as part of a complete record of native North American big game species. Other "pick up" World s Records include the reigning No. 1 non-typical whitetail deer, tule elk, black bear, grizzly bear and Pacific walrus. "When your job is tracking conservation and wildlife management successes, a new World s Record is noteworthy - whether or not it was taken by a hunter," said Richard Hale, chairman of the Club s Big Game Records Co

Images like this tug human heartstrings and create empathy for wildlife. Too bad we can t direct that empathy to where it could really help -- habitat. Cold and snow don t harm wildlife nearly so much as highways, golf courses, housing developments, plowed fields, overgrazed pastures, reservoirs, mowed ditches and groomed woodlots. Wildlife needs wild places. What would you go through for your kids? This adult bald eagle seems to be pretty content in its nest as snow buries Pennsylvania's Codorus State Park...

We saved waterfowl in part with the Duck Stamp. Can we do the same for upland birds with an Upland Stamp? It s time to rise to the occasion and raise funds for grassland birds of all feathers. A Federal hunting stamp could be one answer. Of course, most upland birds aren t migratory like waterfowl, but this doesn t mean we can t devise an equitable system for distributing stamp funds for habitat improvement at the state level. And there are millions of acres of mismanaged federal lands desperate for improvement. Let s get started!   Authors: Christine Cunningham and Brian Koch Artist: Shari Erickson. American landscapes are forever changing as we face the loss of some of our most iconic game bird species. Grassland birds are among the fastest and most consistently declining bird populations in North America and grassland ...

Will winter never end? If you ve ever endured a winter on the Northern Plains where snow falls in mid-November and sticks until late March, you ll recognize this South Dakota bitter country scene. Wind blown grass, packed snow and a brilliant sun dog at the end of the day. Milking time. Cats purring in the barn, steam rising from the backs of the Holsteins. Sounds romantic now that it s 50 years in the rearview mirror... Who can relate?  Screen Shot 2015-03-02 at 6.01.57 PM.png
