Finally cleared the brush at 180 yards where I spotted him with the 10x42 Riton binocular. One 75-grain Berger VLD from Holland Custom M700 in 22-250 AI ended the poultry raids. Lovely winter view from the “back 80” yesterday, although the hike to reach it was a steep price. A foot of snow grew to 2 feet by the time I’d climbed 400 feet over 1/3rd mile. I don’t like to overplay “look what I shot” pics, but look at the size of this greater sandhill crane! More than 6-foot wingspan. Guide @stephendieb said it was one of the largest he’s ever seen. Spectacular birds and thriving in N. A. They nest in wet meadows and eat a variety of plants and animals. Cereal grains like corn and wheat help them survive winter in TX panhandle. Roughly 90% of entire population stages on Platte River in Nebraska in March. Protecting their habitat ensures they’ll survive long term. Here’s that high plains whitetail I found on Walk In Hunting Area in KS. He and I both walked in a couple of miles for our meeting. I was able to close within 300 yards in the wide open, but he started angling away and I couldn’t risk a more blatant approach, so I took him from 350 yards, which was no big deal for the H-S Precision 2000 lightweight rifle in 300 WSM. Nightforce SHV in Talley Rings. Win. 150-grain Power Max Bonded Bullets, of all things. They are quite accurate in that rifle and recoil is negligible. One and done— except for the long haul out.
